Introduction to Escherichia coli O157 in milk (RM-EC.O157)
The Reference Material Escherichia coli O157 (RM-EC.O157) in milk matrix contains WDCM00014; NCCB 100282 Escherichia coli serotype O157:H7 (non-VTEC) and can be used as first line control in microbial analysis for the enumeration of Escherichia coli O157, validation studies, media control and learning purposes.
Escherichia coli O157 is a Gram-positive, rod-shaped, facultative anaerobic bacterium. This bacterium is found in the intestinal contents of cattle, but is best known for causing ‘colonic escherichiosis’. A foodborne illness caused by consumption of contaminated raw leaf green vegetables, undercooked meat and raw milk.
The strain used in this reference material is not capable to produce the Shiga-like toxin (verotoxin).
RM-EC.O157 can be used for different methods, for example:
ISO 16654 Microbiology of food and animal feeding stuffs – Horizontal method for the detection of Escherichia coli O157
ISO 11133 Microbiology of food, animal feed and water - Preparation, production, storage and performance testing of culture media
NEN 6603 Environment and food – Internal quality control by the use of control charts with chemical and microbiological analysis
Results from the detection method (present or absent) as well as the results of counts on agar plates can be plotted in the BiosistoChart according to NEN 6603.
