Introduction to Salmonella Typhimurium in milk (RM-ST)

The Reference Material Salmonella Typhimurium in milk matrix contains WDCM 00031 and NCCB 100483 Salmonella enterica subsp. Enterica serotype Typhimurium and can be used for validation studies, quality control, media control and learning purposes and first line control in microbiological analysis. 

Salmonella Typhimurium is a Gram-negative pathogenic bacterium that is predominantly found in intestinal lumen. In this location it can cause gastroenteritis in both humans and other mammals, leading to diarrhoea.  

RM-ST can be used for different methods, for example:

ISO 6579     Microbiology of the food chain - Horizontal method for the detection, enumeration and serotyping of Salmonella – Part 1: Detection of salmonella spp

ISO 11133    Microbiology of food, animal feed and water - Preparation, production, storage and performance testing of culture media

NEN 6603    Environment and food – Internal quality control by the use of control charts with chemical and microbiological analyses

Results from the detection method (present or absent) as well as the results of counts on agar plates can be plotted in the BiosistoChart according to NEN 6603.

Regulation 2073/2005 lays down microbiological criteria for various combinations of food commodities and microorganisms, their toxins or metabolites. The Regulation differentiates microbiological criteria into Process hygiene and Food safety criteria. Both criteria are applicable to Salmonella species.
