Introduction to CRM-SA, Staphylococcus aureus 

The Certified Reference Material Staphylococcus aureus (CRM-SA) contains Staphylococcus aureus NCCB 100294, WDCM00034 and can be used for validation studies, learning purposes, media control and first line control of microbiological analysis as by enumeration of coagulase-positive Staphylococci/Staphylococcusaureusand total colony count.

Staphylococcus aureusbelongings to the genus Staphylococcus. Staphylococciare toxin producing, Gram-positive, catalase positive cocci which grow aerobically but which are capable of facultative anaerobic metabolism. Staphylococcal foodborne intoxication is a common cause of bacterial food poisoning. 

CRM-SA can be used for different methods, for example:

ISO 6888          Microbiology of food and animal feeding stuffs — Horizontal method for the enumeration of coagulase-positive staphylococci (Staphylococcus aureus)

ISO 4833          Microbiology of food and animal feeding stuffs —Horizontal method for the enumeration of microorganisms —Colony-count technique at 30 °C

ISO 11133        Microbiology of food, animal feed and water – Preparation, production, storage and performance testing of culture media

NEN 6603         Environment and food – Internal quality control by the use of control charts with chemical and microbiological analyses

Results from the detection method (present or absent) as well as the results of counts on agar plates can be plotted in the BiosistoChart according to NEN 6603. 

Regulation 2073/2005 lays down microbiological criteria for various combinations of food commodities and microorganisms, their toxins or metabolites. The Regulation differentiates microbiological criteria into Process hygiene and Food safety criteria. Both criteria are applicable to Staphylococcus aureus
